The United States Barber Quarter, minted between the years 1892 and 1916, was designed by the United States Bureau of the Mint, Chief Engraver, Charles E. Barber.
By the late 1880s, there had become an increasing demand for the replacement of the Seated Liberty design, which had been used since the 1830s on most denominations of United States silver coins. In 1891, Edward O. Leech, the Director of the United States Mint, instructed Charles E. Barber to prepare new designs for the Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar. These designs were approved by President Benjamin Harrison in November 1891 with the striking of the new coins beginning in January 1892.
