1701 'ST. GEORGE' ENGLISH WARSHIP SAILING MODEL
This model of the Royal George of
1715 is very imposing. Figures of fame
and victory crown the whole; royal portraits
and emblems, with sculptures in 18th cen-
tury style making up the rest of the decora-
tion, The Royal Georges of the British
Navy have many famous associations. At
the victory of Quiberon Bay, in 1759, the
master of Hawke's flagship the Royal
George, anxious about the dangerous reefs
and sandbanks on either side, drew from the
adiniral the words: "You have done your
duly in pointing out the danger; now go
and lay me beside the French Admiral!
Hawke's Royal George was the ship
which sank in Spithead while undergoing
repairs in 1782, Rear-Admiral Kempenfelt
and some 800 others being drowned.
