1725 STERN 'DEN ARY" DUTCH EAST INDIAMAN SAILING MODEL
This trading vessel, like all European
merchantmen trading with the East Indies at
that time, is rather like an 18th century man-
of-war. Such East Indiamen carried guns
and trained crews well able to fight, if
necessary, and defend their rich cargoes of
Eastern produce. The model, which is in a
museum at Amsterdam, is made to a scale
of one to 274, and is 76 inches from stem to
stern. Over the lower tier of stern-lights the
ships name and date are carved, and over
the tiller-hole are the arms of Batavia, the
seat of Dutch government in the East
Indies. Besides her 54 great guns, she
mounted swivel guns on her poop.
