    1740  DUTCH SAILING SHIP MODEL
During the 17th century, the great rivals
of the English were the Dutch, who built
fine capable ships which, during the early
part of the century, had no equals. Under
Blake, however, the Dutcu were beaten,
and our Navy again became supreme. Many
valuable Dutch ships fell as prizes to the
British, and had considerable influence on
our naval architecture, as also had the work
of the French in later years. By about
1740 the French had become the dictators
of fashion, and it is interesting to notice
that the carved work of our model is more
French than Dutch in style. This model,
which is in the Musee de Marine, Paris,
although not built to an exact scale,
gives much interesting detail of painting,
    rigging, efc.
