    'BRITANNIA' BRITISH SAILING WARSHIP MODEL
    Our picture shows the decks of the
    Britannia,' the first British ship of that
    name, associated with the battles of Barfleur
    and La Hogue, 1692. In this model, which
    is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York,
    the half-deck and poop are not completely
    planked over, in order to show the con-
    struction beneath. The way in which the
    enrichment of a great ship of this time was
    carried even to its less conspicuous parts is
    beautifully shown. not only in the bulk-
    heads, but also in the graceful stairs, and
    the typical carved human heads, Those at
    each side of the bowsprit are still per-
    petuated in the term Knight-heads,
