1701 'ST. GEORGE' ENGLISH WARSHIP SAILING MODEL
This fine model, which is in the Metro-
politan Museum, New York, is of pear-
wood, and is made to a scale of four feet
to the inch. The model is notable as
possessing practically all her rigging con-
temporary and complete. This 96-gun war-
ship carried a crew of 680 men, and appears
to have been commenced in the reign of
William ILI, and finished in that of Queen
Anne, for the -royal cyphers: of both
monarchs appear upon her decorated stern
and galleries. The ship-name St. George
first appears in the British Navy in the r7th
century, and is associated with Blake's
victories, and in later years with the
unfortunate Admiral Byng. and with the
great names of Hood, Hutham, and Nelson..
