'ROYALL LEWIS' FRENCH LINE-OF-BATTLE WAR SHIP MODEL
The 'Royall Lewis' as Pepys calls her,
was a handsome French Line-of- Battle Ship
built at Toulon as a flagship. She carried
108 guns, and her tonnage is given by
Pepys as 1,800, though a French writer
credits her with a burden of 2,500 tons
and 120 guns; her length where the keel
touched the ground being 147 feet. The
fine model illustrated, almost the only 17th
century French model existing, is in the
Musde Marine, Paris. It shows admir-
ably the characteristic build and decoration
of a French Line-of-Battle Ship. The stern
carvings are especially rich, showing open
galleries in the national$tyle. Under water
the hull is of a form that avoids the Dutch
and English extremes of shallowness and
depth.
