Alfred famously fought off Viking invasions, including winning a decisive victory at the Battle of Edington. He was also instrumental in the conversion of Guthrum, a Viking leader, to Christianity. That makes this coin perfect for students of religious history and English history alike.

Stunning Alfred the Great Design by John Bergdahl
Obverse: A right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that was designed by Jody Clark features on the obverse. The monarch wears earrings and her Royal Diamond Diadem. Her effigy is encircled by inscriptions of her name and abbreviated title, "ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF," and the coin's face value, "5 POUNDS."
Reverse: John Bergdahl based his reverse design on the Alfred Jewel. Who the figure is is a mystery. Some think that it is Christ as Wisdom or Christ in Majesty, but some think that it is Sight from the Fuller Brooch. Rim inscriptions read, "ALFRED THE GREAT 871" and "2021."

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided its grading information on a label that bears an image of one of London's most famous landmarks, Tower Bridge. The grading company awarded the coin its highest grade, Proof 70, thus indicating that it appears perfect under 5x magnification. They also certified it First Releases, which means that it was submitted for grading no more than 30 days after its initial release from the mint.
