PLEASE NOTE: THE EPHEMERA AND PICTURES ARE NOT OFFERED FOR PURCHASE. ONLY THE BRONZE PENDANT IS FOR PURCHASE.Here from the vast estate medal collection of Catholic Cardinal Bonaventure Cerretti is a beautiful bronze medal.
This medal dates from the 19th century, is 1.5 inches long and weighs 10 grams.
It is made of bronze and on the front is the image of St. Marie Madeleine with the inscription in French that reads, "St Mary Magdalene at St. Baume". Catholic tradition says that Mary Magdalene lived for 30 years as hermit in the Sainte-Baume grotto within the Mountains of Southern France.
On the reverse side there is a small image of Mary Magdalene at the center-top and four angels beneath. The inscription in French reads "St Mary Magdalene on the way to Saint-Pilon". Tradition says that on the day of her death, Mary Magdalene was transported by angels to the St Pilon, to receive communion from the hands of St Maximin.
Mary Magdalene was a woman who, according to the four canonical gospels, traveled with Jesus as one of his followers and was a witness to his crucifixion and its aftermath. She was mentioned by name twelve times in the canonical gospels, more than most of the apostles and more than any other woman in the gospels, other than Jesus's family. Mary's epithet Magdalene may mean that she came from the town of Magdala, a fishing town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee in Roman Judea.
This medal is over 100 years old and is typical of those minted in France for pilgrims visiting her church.
