    Description

    This is an
Antique Victorian 5" Souvenir Pitcher / Jug, a Souvenir of The Crystal Palace, England.
At the time of the original listing, we are in the process of listing a large number of antique and vintage items purchased in England.  These items are an eclectic mix including gold and sterling jewelry, and many unique, and in some cases, one of a kind items, in wood, brass, and iron, and other materials as well.
The 5" pitcher has a charming color image of two birds perched in a tree, with "A Present from The Crystal Palace" in gold around the upper rim.  The five sided pitcher is beautifully proportioned and the twig / tree branch motif handle adds to the appeal.
The maker's mark on the bottom indicates that the pitcher was Made in Germany.  If the following information online regarding such marks:
"Laws requiring county-of-origin labels seem to have been a response to German industrialization and protectionism. According to a report by the U.S. International Trade Commission:
Country-of-origin marking laws were first enacted in the 1880s in various European countries to distinguish imported goods (particularly German goods) from domestic goods, and became mandatory in the United States in 1891 with the enactment of the Tariff Act of 1890.
The UK may have been one of the first, with the passage of the Merchandise Marks Act of 1887."
Based on the above information, the overall appearance of the jug, and the information we received from the sellers, the jug is thought to be circa 1880-1900.  If that attribution is correct, the jug would post-date the Great Exhibition of 1851 by several decades after the movement of the Crystal Palace to Sydenham Hill in 1854.  For those interested, additional information I found online is included below.  Additionally, Season 3, Episode 8, of the excellent tv series "Victoria on Masterpiece" will help bring the wonder of The Crystal Palace to life for you.
The wikipedia article on The Crystal Palace includes:
"The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and plate-glass structure originally built in Hyde Park, London, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. The exhibition took place from 1 May until 15 October 1851, and more than 14,000 exhibitors from around the world gathered in its 990,000 square feet (92,000 m2) exhibition space to display examples of technology developed in the Industrial Revolution. Designed by Joseph Paxton, the Great Exhibition building was 1,851 feet (564 m) long, with an interior height of 128 feet (39 m). It was three times the size of St Paul's Cathedral.
The introduction of the sheet glass method into Britain by Chance Brothers in 1832 made possible the production of large sheets of cheap but strong glass, and its use in the Crystal Palace created a structure with the greatest area of glass ever seen in a building. It astonished visitors with its clear walls and ceilings that did not require interior lights.
It has been suggested that the name of the building resulted from a piece penned by the playwright Douglas Jerrold, who in July 1850 wrote in the satirical magazine Punch about the forthcoming Great Exhibition, referring to a "palace of very crystal".
After the exhibition, the Palace was relocated to an area of South London known as Penge Common. It was rebuilt at the top of Penge Peak next to Sydenham Hill, an affluent suburb of large villas. It stood there for 82 years from 1854 until its destruction by fire in November 1936. The nearby residential area was renamed Crystal Palace after the landmark.
    Condition
As found, there is some light to moderate wear on the gold lettering, and the gold trimmed leaves on the scene of the birds.  The pitcher is otherwise in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing.
