    Description

Antique Christopher Columbus Santa Maria Ship 1920s/1930s Print  w Wood Frame 29" x 23"
Antique 1920s - 1930s print of the Santa Maria -
Christopher Columbus’ flagship on his first voyage to America. T
he print seems overlaid on a hardboard backing and framed under glass in a wooden frame.
The sticker on the back is from framing company "
Galindo Mfg. Co. 26 West Broadway, New York
" - in researching the company they seemed to have done a number of ship prints.  Picture nailed in frame all the way around as you can see in the pictures.
The print itself is quite detailed - on the top sail you can see the letters
F and Y - which stands for the King & Queen of Spain - Ferdinand and Isabella
    - back then Isabella was spelled with a "Y" (
Ysabel).  You can also see a crow's nest and on the deck you can see crew members working with the lines or ropes.  The seas look rough on the print, with choppy water and white caps on the waves.
On the bottom left corner the signature reads : "
    Copied by E. Boehm
" .  Then in researching who the original artist may be, we found an antique woodcut print with very similar sails and flags - though there is no attribution to the original artist.
According to history - the Santa María's original name was Marigalante,  About 117 feet (36 meters) long, the “Santa María” had a deck, three masts, and forecastle and sterncastle and was armed with bombards that fired granite balls. She performed well in the voyage but ran aground off Haiti on Dec. 25, 1492, and was lost. Her sister ships, the “Niña” and “Pinta,” less than half her size, returned safely to Spain despite near catastrophe in storms.
Measures approx. with Frame 29.5 x 23.5 inches. Great and rare piece to have for your collection. Graphics are great and color is still awesome.
