Father Solanus was born in 1870 on a farm in Wisconsin to Irish immigrants.  As a young man he worked at various jobs; as a prison guard, hospital orderly, a lumberjack and a street car operator.  Eventually he felt called to the priesthood.  While praying before a statue of the Blessed Virgin he distinctly heard her voice say "go to Detroit".  He joined the Friars Minor Capuchins there and became a priest in 1904.  After serving in New York (Yonkers, NYC and Harlem) he eventually went to St Bonaventure Convent in Detroit.  Serving as the doorman and receptionist, he also held healing services for the sick which were well-attended as word spread of the cures and other blessings which were occurring.  He loved to visit the Holy Eucharist in the middle of the night.  In 1946 his health began to decline and after suffering many years from erysipelas with infections he died in 1956.  Many miraculous cures have been attributed to his intercession.  He was beatified in 2017 after the Vatican confirmed a miraculous healing of a genetic skin condition.
