"A basic two masted vessel that was a fast and sturdy workhorse of its day. The brigantine was also the chosen combat craft of many pirate captains. On her mainmast she carried either square or fore-and-aft sails or combination of both which made her extremely versatile the square sails drove her best in quartering winds and the fore-and-aft sails were effective when sailing to windward. She was 80 feet long and at 150 tons was big enough to mount 10 cannon and carry a crew of 100."
I've seen similar mugs listed as shaving mugs and some as coffee mugs but none quite exactly like this one so I'm not sure if it's original intended use.
