I have received numerous orders for these rim conversions using
woods
other than teak. I have made these using walnut, cocobolo, Bolivian rosewood, and more recently, chechen. See Some of these at the bottom of the Flickr album.
I have received a great deal of interest from Corvette owners and businesses/dealers/restorers. However, you should contact me before buying so that I can provide you with delivery information, which will depend on the order queue. Please also know that I will accept your original wheel either in trade or as a core to build your rim conversion. I provide a 5 credit when you provide a wheel with good spokes.
While I am a maker of all kinds of wood-rimmed steering wheels, I do not produce the frames for these Corvette wheels, preferring instead to convert original wheels for the most accurate of appearances. Those original, stainless spokes hold up very well and generally only display light patina from decades of use.
The pictures I have provided are from various recent conversions so that you can see how each one I produce is of the same high quality. Rest assured that every rim I make will be of the same high quality. No wheel will leave my shop until I have approved of its finish.
I am frequently asked if I can do these conversions to 1967 or later wheels. The answer is yes, basically any of the GM wheels of this style can be converted. I have also learned that most Corvette owners that contact me are not familiar enough with the details of the teak rim to make an informed decision when shopping all of the available replicas. I am happy to provide information to help make that decision.
This is a new rim conversion to an original steering wheel. Lempert Wheels has been doing these teak rim conversions for 15 years with great results and very satisfied customers. This is the most accurate rim conversion available, using real
(Tectona grandis)
teak and rosewood. The most difficult part of making an accurate rim is the shape. The original rims by the Howard Miller Clock Company had an elliptical shape when looking at a cross-section of the rim. The front and rear did not have simple round-overs. The original rim dimensions have been replicated with the proper shape, including the finger grips on the rear. Compare this wheel to any original and appreciate the detail accuracy.
