    The Hudson–Fulton Celebration
from September 25 to October 9, 1909 in New York and New Jersey was an elaborate commemoration of the 300th anniversary of
    Henry Hudson
    ’s discovery of the
    Hudson River
    and the 100th anniversary of
    Robert Fulton
's first successful commercial application of the
    paddle steamer
. The maritime achievements of Hudson and Fulton foreshadowed the importance of the river to New York's progress and identity. Organizers used the event not only to display the success of the two men, but also the status of New York City as a world city and the achievements of its citizens.  There were many historical parades in the participating cities (Troy, Poughkeepsie, Cohoes, etc.) and neighborhoods.  The 4 largest were in New York City.  The Historical Parade was held September 28 and contained 54 floats divided into 4 periods.  The Great Naval Parade was held October 1, with the Half Moon, Clermont,  US Navy warships, other country's warships, private yachts, even the new modern steamship RMS Lusitania.  The Lusitania was later sunk in 1915 by Germany submarine U-20.  The Naval Parade started in both NYC and Albany and merged at Newburgh.  There was a Children's Parade that involved 200,000 children held on October 2.  Flight was also a feature of the Celebration with Wilbur Wright performing many demonstration flights, and Glenn Curtis to a lesser degree.  (source of above paragraph is Wikipedia).
