Built New York 1807 Length 133 ft. 78 tons
When Robert Fulton's North River Steam Boat, the first steamer to succeed com-
mercially, made her maiden trip up the Hudson, she astonished many people and
terrified some. Backed by the wealthy Robert R. Livingston and built by Fulton, the
new craft was not so much an invention as the product of many men's inventions.
Her hull was built in New York, her engine in England. Her sidewheels represented
what was to be the most popular form of steamboat propulsion for the next 75
years. On September 4, 1807, she began regular New York-Albany service with
paying passengers. Strangely, most books give her a name she never bore officially:
Clermont. Clermont, Livingston's Hudson River estate, was the North River Steam
Boat's home port. This sketch, believed among the most reliable pictures of her, was
done from memory by Richard V. DeWitt 40 years after her retirement in 1814.
