Item Description:
Unmounted lantern slide (no cover plate): Dressed in traditional clothes (except the man is in 'Occidental' shoes), the Japanese musician is providing drum music for the lady's dance. Just to the left you can see the drum and, though hard to discern, a blurred drumstick can be seen in his hand. There is a painted Japanese scene (again a bit hard to discern) on the backdrop behind them and an American flag and portrait of George and Martha Washington hanging above [the patriotic items are probably due to the fact Japan and USA were 'having issues' over immigration.

Condition:
some emulsion silvering at edges ; minor soiling ; minor scratches ; minor wear to some edges. some emulsion missing at lower left edge.

The California Midwinter International Exposition was held in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park from January 27 to July 4, 1894. It showcased selected exhibits from Chicago’s Columbian World's Fair as well as an impressive number of new exhibits at its specially constructed fairground, the 'Sunset City'. Some variations for the Fair: San Francisco's Midwinter Fair and simply The Midwinter Fair, you can also find the abbreviation: CMIE.
