Luncheon or salad plate with the burgee of the New York Yacht Club. The plate also bears the private signal flag of James Cockcroft and his private yacht KISMET. The third flag I have not identified. Perhaps the 3rd flag was his personal signal flag and the one with the K was just for the Kismet.
James Cockcroft was a wealthy New England lawyer and publisher. Cockcroft was a long time member of the New York Yacht club. He was somehow injured in the 1909 sinking of the White Star Line H.M.S. Republic and two years later died as a result. The Republic had been known as "the millionaires vessel'' for its luxurious appointments and had been equipped with an early wireless radio system. As a result of this radio system 1500 passengers were rescued from the sinking, one of them being James Cockcroft.
Plate is marked with the D&C markings as shown. Cockcroft died in 1911, so I assume this is older than that.
Plate is in good used condition. There is a small chip on the underside I point out in the photos. I was worried about damaging the gold so I will leave a careful cleaning to the new owner. Gold has some slight nicks but well over 98% intact. There are a few slight scuffs to the glaze it is otherwise very good.
Plate measures approx. 7&3/4" wide.
