Frank H. Nowell (1864-1950)Official photographer for the 1909 Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition.
Old Seattle Estate Find! Offered here is a large (24" by 20") matt finish photograph of Nowell's 1907 Camp Nome No. 9 collage. Circa. 1907-1949 ~ 70 to 100yrs old. Nowell closed his Seattle photo studio in the 1940s so this pre-dates his death in 1950. The original collage was constructed as a working template to create this large-scale photographic image. It's unlikely that the original collage still exists. The
straight pin
sizes and shadows (see pics 3&9) suggest he was photographing the collage same-size. There are numerous photographed pin-holes (we count 12) on the borders (see pic 3) confirming he repeatedly pinned it down and photograph it over a number of years: when a customer requested the image.
Pictured are historic figures from the Alaskan Gold Rush. Many have their own Wikipedia pages. John Franklin Alexander Strong (1856–1929), Governor of the Territory of Alaska, is just one of the 284 prominent Alaskan citizen's pictured. L.L. Lane & T.T. Lane, sons of Charles D. Lane, are readily seen in the top row. Charles passed away in 1911, four years after this collage was created. He would have most-certainly ordered one of these photos to hang at Utica Mansion.
Creating this collage was a monumental task. Nowell had to photograph each of the nearly three hundred members, then cut those photos into ovals and mount & label each by hand. He did this back in 1907 and many of these pillars of the community were the money behind the 1909 Seattle World's Fair (Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition). It's no wonder he was chosen as the Fair's official photographer.
To date the only other known copy of this photo was last seen in the foyer of a bank in Nome Alaska back in the 1980s. That copy was damaged. This copy
is in near mint condition.
