Description
Here is an outstanding and exceptionally rare Balinese Topeng dance mask, wholly intact,70-90 years old.
Such masks are considered sacred and almost all cases are part of the temple. Not only as an artifact but also as part of the essence of the temple.
In the Topeng dance, the dancer becomes one with the mask, when entering a state of trans, once wearing it.
The only Topeng masks, one will usually find, are either touristic items or just a small part of the mask regalia.
This mask is made of two parts: 1. The actual face mask, made of wood, painted with natural dye. The eyes of the wood mask are made of glass it seems.
2. The crown and headpiece is made of buffalo hide, bamboo structure, and ajuk [the bark of a special palm tree].
The buffalo hide crown is gilded and set with colored glass.
Considering the age and usage, the condition is fantastic!
Such items are so rare on the market because they will be kept in the temple until deteriorating and even then, will rarely be sold.
