    The Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary symbolize their abiding love for humanity. Though the Sacred Heart of Jesus was dogma and iconography developed during the Middle Ages, it became popularized following the canonization of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 19th century following visions of Jesus revealing His heart ablaze inside his chest.
