Vasco da Gama, Portuguese Vasco da Gama, 1er conde da Vidigueira, (born c. 1460,
Sines, Portugal-died December 24, 1524, Cochin, India), Portuguese navigator whose
voyages to India (1497-99, 1502-03, 1524) opened up the sea route from western
Europe to the East by way of the Cape of Good Hope.
The Sao Gabriel was the flagship of Vasco da Gama's armada on his first voyage to
India in 1497-1499.
he Sao Rafael: The sister ship of the Sao Gabriel, built by the same builder at the same
time for the same purpose. It was of similar dimensions as the SGabriel. Paulo da
Gama.
The Berrio, also known as the Sao Miguel: This caravel was named after its former
owner. Only carrying lateen sails, it was the smallest and swiftest of the convoy with a
tonnage of 50t-90t.
A supply ship, name Sao Miguel: The ship was a carrack of about 110 or 200 tons.
