✅ The Sovereign of the Seas was launched in 1637 warship of the English Navy and at that time was the largest ship ever built. It measured 168 feet along the gun deck by 48 feet in the beam, a tonnage of 1141 burden, and more powerfully armed than any other ship in the world. The elaborately gilded stern ordered by Charles I of England meant enemy ships knew it as the "Golden Devil". It was later renamed HMS Sovereign, and then HMS Royal Sovereign at the Restoration of Charles II.
✅ The ship was popularly known as the 'Golden Devil' for her heavy armament and superb gold ornamentation. In her first naval engagment in 1652, the Sovereign sank a Dutch warship with a single broadside.
