Description
Our Sunbeam Alpines and Tigers are now over 50 years old. One of the parts that you see every time you drive your car is the steering wheel plastic hub that is most likely cracked in several places-or even falling off the hub!Two long time Sunbeam Alpine and Sunbeam Tiger owners got tired of seeing these cracked hubs and came up with the idea of making an upgraded steering wheel hub made of modern materials so they will never crack again.
This is the end result of a nearly one year
project
-a complete replacement steering wheel hub assembly to fit all Sunbeam Tigers and all Sunbeam Alpine S3, S4, and SV's.
This
originally began as a 5 inch round solid
roll
of Delrin plastic material and
it
was machined using many different steps and tools to create this
machined replacement
with the look
of the original
-even the main seam of this hub where the two sections join together is in the same location as the original . Delrin is a Dupont product and is a very high strength thermoplastic which can be used to machine parts formerly made of metal such as rollers, gears, and bushings as well as many other products. It is machinable to close tolerances and is impervious to water, oils, gasoline, and other solvents.
With the
cost
of an original mint condition steering wheel
now
getting
to be
very expensive, this is your chance to buy the
one
part that is almost always cracked
and distorted or bleached out from the sun. It may have been previously
repaired using epoxy or body filler and is now cracked again.
The restoration of your steering wheel begins by removing the old cracked hub. The worse it is cracked, the easier it is to remove from the steering wheel! I used a hacksaw to saw the old hub from top to bottom and then a large screwdriver to pry apart the brittle old plastic hub which broke apart into several pieces. There are several parts to this new hub assembly-the top and bottom as well as three special socket head bolts and washers. Just slide the bottom of the new hub assembly over the metal steering wheel center and then put the steering wheel back on your car and tighten the steering wheel mounting nut
using a one inch deep well socket. Then install the top of the new hub center on top and insert the horn ring assembly and the center adjustable steering column locking nut in place and finally tighten the three new hub mounting bolts in stages to seat the new hub assembly in place.
These were expensive to
make as CAD drawings
were made, supplies
were ordered, and then they were machined
by several custom
machine shops. Each has been test fitted to a steering wheel assembly to make sure it fits correctly! We had a few made for our cars and then we had more made to recoup our costs.
These are made in the USA.
Thank-you.
The Rootes car club patches are just for display and are not included!
Buying and selling on eBay is supposed to be fun! I try to make it that way. No long lists of negative and threatening sounding rules and regulations to read before bidding on my items. I will ship parts anywhere in the world. I will state the charges in the auction so there are no surprises when it comes time to pay. I will gladly combine multiple items you may win from me and ship them in one box to save on your shipping costs. Parts will be mailed via Priority Mail if in the USA and they will be well packed so they arrive to you in excellent condition-and I won't ship anything in an old cereal box or charge you Priority Mail rates and mail parts to you via cheaper and slower 1st Class Mail! Most important-I won't sell any junk or anything that I would not use on my own cars. I have never ended an auction early so if you want to bid on one of my items, rest assured that it will be posted for the entire seven days so as to be fair to everyone. Thanks for reading and bidding and for looking at my other auctions!
