    Description

    USS ANCHORAGE LPD-23; a naval first day cover postmarked from Norcross, GA on Jan 27, 2017. Color photo of ship on cachet #9035 by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964.
    The second US Navy ship with the name, USS Anchorage was built in Avondale, Louisiana by Northrup Grumman, launched in 2011, and christened on 14 May 2011.
    Cover franked with a 49 cent flag stamp and Alaska 6 cent Haida Canoe stamp.
    This fine 684 foot San Antonio Class amphibious transport dock was commissioned on 4 May 2013 and can transport nearly 700 troops, plus two LCAC craft and many fighting vehicles on three decks. On 5 December 2014 the ship served as the recovery vessel for NASA's Orion's Exploration Flight Test 1.
