This is a brand new 7/8" oval nickel silver medal made in Italy.  It comes on a 24" stainless steel neck chain which has no clasp - slip it over your head (fits over most size heads).    The image is beautifully detailed of Matt Talbot

n prayer.  On the back of the medal are the words which are a prayer for assistance: "Self-control and charity are sorely needed today Matt Talbot" and a smaller "Italy".

Matt Talbot is considered the modern saint of alcoholics and their families; especially recovered alcoholics or people addicted to alcohol or other drugs and wish to be free of their addiction.   He was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1856 to a large family of heavy drinkers.  At the age of 12 he left school and went to work in a wine shop; soon he was sampling their wares, and within a few years was considered a hopeless alcoholic.   For 16 years, he pawned all his possessions; ran up debts, and even stole to feed his drinking.   In 1884, he found himself sitting on the curb in front of a bar, broke and in debt, hoping someone would offer him a drink.  When no one did, he decided to take a sobriety pledge and give up drinking.  He went to the Holy Cross brothers and took the pledge for 3 months, then 6 months, then for life.  For the next 44 years until his death, he lived a life of sobriety.  He found daily Mass, prayer, and reading religious material a great help, especially during the first 7 years of his new life.  He scrupulously paid off all of his debts and even tried to find those he stole from; when he couldn't, he paid to have Masses said for them.  A man who found his strength in his faith, Matt Talbot is the perfect role model for anyone trying to give up drinking; or for friends or family members of alcoholics; or those who work to help all addicts.   Matt's life is one which proves the power of prayer which can overcome all difficulties.
The prayer cards which come with our rosaries, medals and pictures are home-made, created using a "greeting card" program on a computer and printed in full color on nice quality paper. Although they are not like the usual smaller professionally printed prayer cards, most of our customers prefer them since they are like a pamphlet with 4 "pages" and several images, prayers, patronages and often other information about the saint or Catholic devotion.
