Description
This listing is for a vintage 1960's men's necktie by Countess Mara in cream with brown and orange dots. This tie measures 3 3/4" wide x 54" long. It features a embroidered rows of dark brown and orange dots on a cream field.
It has a "Contess Mara" monogram with a crown above it in dark brown. It was sold by Boyd's Menswear of Philadelphia, PA. and carries both a Contess Mara and a Boyd's embroidered label.
Countess Mara was founded in 1935 by Lucilla Mara de Vescovi and was an Italian's menswear fashion label specializing in high-end pictorial neckties. Countess Mara herself, travelled through Europe, purchasing fabrics that she brought back to New York with the intention of launching a career making men's ties. The ties featured several novel marketing decisions. She had the initials C.M. initialed on the outside blade of each tie, ensuring that they were instantly recognizable and the ties were made of very limited quantities, typically only fifteen dozen per design, and they were comparatively expensive. Her ties became collector's items, sought after by celebrities and fashion conscious businessmen. She described her ties as "jungles" populated with trees, flowers and animals. However, her ties also featured a wide range of other subjects. In 1944, Countess Mara was awarded the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in recognition of the influence her ties had had upon fashion. Among her most high-profile wearers were Frank Sinatra and J. Edgar Hoover. Countess Brand was purchased in March of 1998 by Randa Accessories.
This tie has nice body and lays flat. It is lined with white silky lining fabric.
This item does not smell of smoke, mildew, mothballs or have pet odor. It has been cleaned and smells very slightly of must. It does not have any tie tack holes or (food) stains.
There are several very light, tiny dots at 20" from the front bottom. It seems too high for a tie tack; they may be up far enough that they would be in the knot?
