    Description

    Length: 48"
    Width: 3.125"
Here’s one for the Art Deco enthusiasts among us: a bold brocade tie with Tetris-like shapes of satin cascading down a brown and white basketweave ground. Made by Wickfield exclusively for E.C. Olson & Co. of Sioux City, SD, c.1930s/1940s. Excellent vintage condition, some minor instances of wear near the tip (see last photo).
Born in Wisconsin to Norwegian immigrants, Edgar C. Olson (1874-1937) began operating clothing stores in South Dakota in 1901 for The Model Clothing House chain, and after collaborating with various partners (including with his brother M.G. Olson), eventually launched an enterprise under his name solely. At the height of his commercial expansion around 1913, Olson operated nine stores throughout the Dakotas and Minnesota; by 1930, he had sold all but his Sioux City and Brookings locations, and after 1954, the Sioux City location was all the remained. Following his death, his son Lyle W. Olson (1907-1994) managed the business until his own retirement in 1973; the company ceased operations that next year.
