    Description

A Bold Look-era geometric brocade in brilliant red satin peppered with overlapping blue and white octagons and tiny orange triangles. Retailed through Coppin’s Department Store of Covington, KY, c.1940s. Excellent vintage condition, small area of faint yellow near the knotting area.
John R. Coppin (1848-1913) opened the California Dry Goods Co. at the corner of Seventh Street and Madison Avenue in Covington, KY in 1873 and fortune shone down favorably upon him; in 1907 he commissioned the city’s first “skyscraper” (seven stories) with racetrack winnings and by 1910 he changed the name of the company to his own. His store would remain the region’s largest high-end department store for decades; it closed in 1977 and the building has recently been converted into a fashionable hotel with its restaurant named after the former department store. If you look closely, you might even find that the tie matches the octagonal columns in the store’s lobby!
